Genomic signatures of divergent selection are associated with social behaviour for spinner dolphin ecotypes

چکیده
Understanding the genomic basis of adaptation is critical for understanding evolutionary processes and predicting how species will respond to environmental change. Spinner dolphins in eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) present a unique system studying adaptation. Within this large geographical region are four spinner dolphin ecotypes with weak neutral genetic divergence no obvious barriers gene flow, but strong spatial variation morphology, behaviour habitat. These have population sizes, which could reduce effects drift facilitate selection. To identify regions putatively under divergent selective pressures between ecotypes, we used genome scans 8994 RADseq single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) differentiation outliers genotype–environment association outliers. Gene ontology enrichment analyses indicated that outlier SNPs from both types were associated multiple genes involved social hippocampus development, including 15 human disorder autism. Evidence selection on supported by previous evidence these differ mating systems behaviours. In particular, three ETP probably polygynous characterized premating competition among males, whereas fourth ecotype has polygynandrous postmating such as sperm competition. Our results provide may be an force driving diversification ETP, potentially result sexual different systems. Future studies should further investigate potential adaptive role candidate identified here, find signatures using whole sequence data.

Heterogeneous genomic differentiation between walking-stick ecotypes: "isolation by adaptation" and multiple roles for divergent selection.
Genetic differentiation can be highly variable across the genome. For example, loci under divergent selection and those tightly linked to them may exhibit elevated differentiation compared to neutral regions. These represent "outlier loci" whose differentiation exceeds neutral expectations. Adaptive divergence can also increase genome-wide differentiation by promoting general barriers to neutra...
متن کاملIntestinal coccidiosis in a spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris).
Intestinal coccidiosis was diagnosed histologically in the small intestine of a spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris). Numerous intralesional coccidia were present in mucosal epithelial cells. Schizonts, gamonts, and unsporulated oocysts were seen. Schizonts were up to 30 x 20 microm and contained up to 16 merozoites, which measured 10-12 x 2 microm. Unsporulated oocysts were about 9-12 x 8-1...
متن کاملDivergent selection and heterogeneous genomic divergence.
Levels of genetic differentiation between populations can be highly variable across the genome, with divergent selection contributing to such heterogeneous genomic divergence. For example, loci under divergent selection and those tightly physically linked to them may exhibit stronger differentiation than neutral regions with weak or no linkage to such loci. Divergent selection can also increase...
متن کاملAbundance and Survival Rates of the Hawai’i Island Associated Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris) Stock
Reliable population estimates are critical to implement effective management strategies. The Hawai'i Island spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) is a genetically distinct stock that displays a rigid daily behavioural pattern, foraging offshore at night and resting in sheltered bays during the day. Consequently, they are exposed to frequent human interactions and disturbance. We estimated pop...
